What Is Gas Safety Week

Date Published 02 September 2024

Gas Safety Week is an annual event that aims to raise awareness and promote the importance of, yes you've guessed it, gas safety. This year it runs from 9th to 15th September and it's been happening now for fourteen years.

Whether you're a home owner, landlord or tenant, making sure that your gas appliances are safe to use is extremely important.

Gas Safety Register
The yearly Gas Safety Week campaign is run and organised by the Gas Safety Register. As the UK's official gas registration body, among the most important aspects of their work is the regulation of gas contractors and engineers. Checking to see if a tradesperson is listed on the register is an easy way to make sure that your work is being carried out by qualified and certified professionals.

The theme for this year's Safety Week is 'Checking? Every Check Counts' and the idea is to highlight a broad range of messages to owners and users of gas appliances and fittings.

In a bid to keep the nation gas safe, each year thousands of companies and organisations take part in the event, both in terms of spreading the word and taking the appropriate actions. There are many different ways to help promote awareness and these all ultimately help build a gas safe community.

As a leading estate agent in the Worthing area we are happy to play our part each year.

Checks
One of the aims of Gas safety is to reduce gas-related safety incidents. Obviously major problems such as explosions are thankfully few and far between, but more insidious risks such as carbon monoxide poisoning can be just as dangerous.

Natural gas is actually odourless, which is why a strong-smelling additive is used to allow any leaks to be noticed quickly. Distinctive and rather unappealing, the smell is a bit like rotten eggs - if you think there might be a leak you must do something about it immediately.

The National Gas Emergency Service is there to investigate and take all necessary actions. Their number is 0800 111 999 and your call will always be taken extremely seriously.

Landlords
Understanding your gas safety responsibilities is not only a moral obligation it is a legal one too.

Legislation such as the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998 and the Landlord and Tenant Act (1985) both cover the way that gas appliances must be maintained.

Landlords must make sure any gas equipment they supply has been safely installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer, and an annual gas safety check on each appliance and flue must be carried out by a registered engineer too.

Tenants should be given a copy of the gas safety check record before they move in or within 28 days of the check being done.
